In 2000, Cliffs Asia Pacific and HWE Mining entered into an agreement to jointly mine ore at Cockatoo Island, the only known sub-sea mining operation in the world.

The mine boasts an exceptional, virtually pure haematite orebody.

Once designed, it will undergo total cost management, which is that area of engineering practice where engineering judgment and experience are used in the application of scientific principles and techniques to determine the value of implementation through sound cost engineering principles.
